      Metropolitan Museum of ArtFounded in 1870, and located in New York City, New York, the Metropolitan Museum’s collection now contains more than two million works of art from all points of the compass, ancient through modern times. It contains about 6,500 objects. The web site can be searched by artist, period, style, or keyword. Also has a timeline of art history.
      Museum of Modern ArtFounded in 1929 as an educational institution, The Museum of Modern Art is dedicated to being the foremost museum of modern art in the world.
      National Museum of Women in the ArtsThis is the only museum in the world dedicated exclusively to recognizing the contributions of women artists. The web site has information about women artists, and exhibits at the museum located in Washington, D.C.
      Prehistoric Art Virtual MuseumThis is a virtual museum, at The State Hermitage Museum, devoted to prehistoric peoples and art of the Southern Siberian Steppes and the Central Asian Republics.
      Rijks Museum – AmsterdamThis museum is home to an art collection that features over 400 great masterpieces of painting. It houses the world’s largest collection of paintings from the Dutch Golden Era, as well as all kinds of decorative art items. The museum plans to break with tradition and integrate its collections so that all art works from a period will be shown together instead of separated by genre.
